And when youre not getting the sound you want, make sure you dont just check the big stuff... make sure you are running some quality cable (canare/neutrik) or your sound will suffer, no matter what your mic or preamp is

Be careful with this statement. There's a lot of debate over whether or not "quality", "high-end", "expensive" cable is worth it. Solid connections are obviously worth it, but even in mastering circles, [edit] paying $100/ft for cable is up for debate [end edit]. The response through various types of cable is rarely significant in the audible audio range. If we were talking GHz, it'd be a different story.

Agreed. I was alluding to a few earlier discussions on Brad's board in which the Great Debate was stirred--is there hard data that supports a need to buy $100/ft cable? Good cable is, as you say, not expensive.
