First, I'd like to say one thing, especially to those of you looking for "great new pop music". If you're over 25, pop music is not meant for you! Even 25 is pushing it. Remember that the youth do not want to listen to music that people more than twice their age do. Think of the music that shaped your formative years - whether the Beatles and the Stones, Zeppelin and the Who, the Pistols and the Clash, the Cure and U2, or Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Would it have been "cool" if 40-somethings and your parents were "in to" that music too?
Sure, a few "pop" artists may be talented and timeless enough to earn the respect of an adult - but you must stop looking for new pop music that will move you the way something did when you were in high school or college. It's not going to happen, and it's not supposed to happen. Leave the music of the youth for the young, and find your own sh**! Let them own their music the way you did - and try to understand why it doesn't touch you the same way. (And let them have their "junk", too. Are you telling me there weren't any records in your youth that you'd be a little embarrassed about now? Wham!? The Sweet? )
Having said that, one "music of the young" artist you should check out is Bright Eyes. His album in 2007, "Cassadaga", is IMO a great album. I was very impressed on the first listen.
Radiohead's "In Rainbows" is pretty good too.
If you're looking for something more adult, some great recent releases:
Norah Jones "It's Too Late" 2007. She shows a maturity in her craft, and a definite Tom Waits-like influence. I was pleasantly surprised (though I liked her first two records as well.)
Kris Drever's "Black Water" 2007, folk.
Mason Jennings and Jeffrey Foucault have both released several really strong albums in the last few years.
Stefon Harris "African Tarantella" 2006, pretty amazing.
Mark Knopfler's "Kill To Get Crimson" has already been mentioned.
(also his 2006 album with Emmylou Harris)
Joni Mitchell's "Shine" 2007.
Chris Potter 10 "Song For Anyone" 2007, 10 piece jazz with string trio.
Manu Katche "Playground", 2007.
Alison Krauss, with or without Robert Plant, has been mentioned.
Keith Jarrett's "My Foolish Heart".
Almost anything release by ECM - jazz, classical, experimental. Ranging from the beautiful to the bizarre.
Suzanne Vega's "Beauty and Crime" was pretty good.
Chick Corea & Bela Fleck "The Enchantment" 2007.
Robyn Hitchcock and Elvis Costello are still making great music.
Robyn's last few albums are as good as almost anything he's done.

To borrow from Red Green -
The next time someone complains about how bad today's music is, just hum a few bars of 1910 Fruitgum Company's "Yummy Yummy Yummy I Got Love In My Tummy"...

Good point there, Nick. I think that that, as an artist, if you have something youthful to say, do it while you're young. I think that most of the best artists reflect their age well and never try to be something that they're not--sometimes I think that the more that some artists try to be current or hip or cutting edge, the more it often looks silly. A few artists, I think, can do it, but if you play to what's hip and try to look young when you're not, it looks a bit goofy.

The Captain of my small, yet naively effective musical brain is saying do not, under any circumstances, take the time to intellectualize anything musically right this minute. Do not do it. Just go play.

Ps. Now, angry punk and rock bands with an attitude. I agree completely on that, with 45 year old guys still doing their "punk rock" thing wearing gold watches and expensive shoes. That's supposed to be very angry youngsters, most of the time.

Yeah, that was what I was referring to. There's one guy that I was in a band with--he was in his late 40's--and he was trying to reclaim all this punk rock hoohaw--you know, government= bad, punks vs. hippies, not giving into the "man" etc. I had to leave the band because it was just a bunch of ridiculous posturing--I liked the attitude that he had to the music, but the lyrics were like....dude, instead of singing about the government and smashing the system and all of this, shouldn't you start to sing about the perils and evils of wearing Depends, your dentures falling out, and your sanity fleeting?
I think that the latter was in full effect, though. He worked for the government, too, so I really don't know what he was achieving when he accepted his paycheque from "the man". I'm serious in saying that I could write a good book about jamming and being in bands with...interesting people....

I've just can't stop listening to a new CD called "Full Moon On Blues Street" by Kenny Acosta, a blues man from Baton Rouge who has paid his dues. It was mastered by Johnny Sandlin (Allman Bros, Widespread Panic, Jeff Beck, Delbert McClinton, Wet Willie, etc.) and it is absolutely a delightful listen. What a voice!

Glad you dig, man! He was a good guy, but he was obviously trying to hang onto or reclaim some sort of glory. Only Lemmy, Iggy, Mick and Keith and blues dudes can get old and be young....though it backfired on Iggy with last year's really sub-par Stooges album!
I'm not sure if I mentioned this in here (I mentioned it in J Hall's forum), but the new Black Mountain is really good. I tend to think that they still have that real magnum opus in 'em, but "In The Future" is a really great album--Sabbath, a bit of 70's prog, and psych folk and overall psychedelia make it one to watch, 'fer sure. They've got alot of hype and good press for it, too. I think that it's 57 minutes, so it's a real epic album with fuzz guitars, male/ female vocals, and some cool instrumentation like Mellotron.

That Black Mountain record is a real grower. The first listen was "it's decent". The second was sort of the same, then the fourth and fifth listens, it really started to work it's magic. IMHO, everyone here needs to hear "Bright Lights"--a 17 minute opus that starts off with spacy acoustics and male/ female vocals (Stephen McBean/ Amber Webber) that segues into a Sabbath stomper, and then eventually a slow groove amidst some sort of backwards delay/ reverb sonics that allows for a monstrous crescendo when the full band kicks in. I'm getting chills just thinking about it. They could have easily went much longer on that one...it takes a long time to reach it's apex, but albums like this are rare in that it works it's magic over the course of time, space and relaxed atmospheres that allow them enough dynamic shift in pacing and loud to soft, fast to slow type material.
Production's really good, too--big, with meticulous arrangements, but something that the band can pull off live.
Anyone that thinks that there's nothing good being done musically these days needs to sit down with this one for at least 4 or 5 listens. Not one, not two, not even three. It's not overly busy in the arrangements and production, but i'm hearing something different on each one. WELL done, and they've earned the hype that they've got on this one.
