Hello all,
My studio, Resonate, is looking for entry level workers and/or assistant engineers. Because I try to encourage a mentality that "we all do everything", the job would entail serving as runner part of the time and serving as assistant engineer sometimes, with duties ranging from helping to keep the building clean, running errands for my staff and our clients, some light food preparation (you'll learn the fine art of chocolate chip cookies), helping with CD labeling, packaging and shipping, general office duties, answering phones, opening up the studio in the morning and/or closing the studio at night, to being an assistant engineer during sessions, being involved with setup/teardown of sessions, assisting the visiting engineer, etc.
Qualifications would include general audio knowledge, extensive ProTools knowledge, preferably some experience in other studios, a professional appearance, a tremendous attitude, a willingness to learn and work hard. We have a great staff and a top flight facility. We are located in Burbank. Pay would start at slightly above minimum wage and advance commensurate with your performance, etc. You would be paid through the state system, so you'd get your overtime, etc. I have a very strict no-smoking-at-work policy. If you can't go a long day without needing a cigarette, you probably shouldn't bother applying. And please, I'd like to limit this offer to those of you already living in Los Angeles. I'd hate to see anyone move to Los Angeles on our account, only to find that it doesn't work out or we don't have enough hours for you to cover your hotel bill, etc.
Please PM me with questions, and I'll give you an email address to which you could send your resume. If you'd like to learn more about our facility, please visit www.resonate.la. Thanks much, everyone!

As I recall, a young man who held a similar position over at Image (JVN's old spot) got a shot mixing a top 10 record, which led to all sorts of good things for him.
You won't need any useless audio engineering degree with an apprenticeship like this. It's the real way into the biz.

Hey thanks for the vote there, Kitchener!
Mikey, I'm also bothered at the general pay scales in our industry. As you know, most studios take on interns for no pay, and I have never felt comfortable with that approach. I'd like to pay an employee for his/her time. As mentioned in the post, we also pay overtime per the state requirements, and our minimum wage in Cali is something like $8.00 which is higher than most states. Still, trying to live in Los Angeles on those wages is definitely challenging, and I wish I had a better solution.
The sad part, however, is that studio rates today are no higher than when I started way back in 1978, yet everything else (rent, utilities, labor, workman's comp insurance, materials, etc) is probably double or triple what is was in the 1970's. From this, you can see how hard it is for studios to continue to provide a home for up and coming young engineers. I mean, if the vast majority of commercial studios are forced to close, where will young engineers learn the skills of engineering? Sure, you can buy yourself a ProTools LE system, and that will teach you how to operate ProTools, but how will you learn the valuable lessons that only come by assisting under visiting engineers who often have lots of valuable experience under their belts? It's an ever present question, and I wish I had the answer. I must say that I fear for the art of engineering as our industry continually contracts and recedes.
Resonate is truly one of the nicest facilities, and I've been blessed with tremendous employees since 1983, when I opened Image Recording. I can only hope that the opportunities I am able to offer are a positive step in this ever changing, and ever-challenging industry.
