That's not an unusual reality in any industry though, is it?

With all respect but this is not true.
According to a friend of mine (former chief engineer of AKG, now retired) were about an estimated 200 of "Telefunken- and Siemens-Versions of C 12 (ELA 250/251 respectively SM 203/204)" made. Certainly not more! He said.
This is not an exact number just a guess of even an older staff member of AKG.
There are no exact records anymore.
- AKG build between 1953 and 1960 the original AKG C12. About "1000" C12's.
- 1400 "C 12A's" were made...
Like I said this information is at first hand.
- He also told me why the ELA 250/251 is so rare:
The C12 were made for AKG's main market. AKG derivatives like the "ELA 250/251" and the "Siemens SM 203/204" were just a welcome side business for AKG.
These Telefunken/Siemens Mic's were made for broadcasting stations not for the general market. The C12 became popular in the US in the 1970's. When people discovered that the "ELA 250/251" is a slightly different version of the C12 the "ELA 250/251" became also popular.
The reason why the ELA 250/251 is more worth is simply because it's a rarer Mic.
- The $23,500 is certainly a collectors price not more or less... IMHO

Hello Gunter,
over the years several different AKG employees as well Telefunken sales people stated different numbers that vary quite a lot.
I think it is like Morpheus said,
No one really knows...
