"pleasures like an ELO or ELP (one bloody letter away!), Yes, Supertramp or Genesis or Alan Parsons Project or Floyd "
i love all those acts you just named
i don't like steely dan
the only reason i would listen to their records is as a primer on what NOT to do in the studio (i actually watched their "behind the scenes" episode for that reason)
imo, the main factor is absence of "fun"
those guys took themselves FAR too seriously
hard to believe that such funny lyrics can end up in such dreary arrangements
imo...
{i have a further theory that donald fagen may just be TOO cynical (to the point of self-immolation)
i think, all artistes need a, at least, a smidgin of naivete/innocence}
cheers,

Six of one, half dozen of the other. I appreciate Steely Dan's music for what it is, well written, carefully produced, well executed songs. I don't reach for the volume when it comes up on the radio, nor do I own much of it at all. For bands with an SD abbreviation, I would rather turn up Social Distortion instead, as it is far more simple and organic to me, and I rather like it.
For what it is, it is good. Fagan and company did very well, and can't begrudge them for it at all. I do know I cringe when I hear someone tuning a live rig with it though....... far far too cliche.......

I like tarragon. Yum. I like to put it in dishes where I haven't tried it before and, surprisingly, I find it rarely screws up.
Steely Dan, they're good at what they do and very clever, they groove well, but I've never found them inspiring like tarragon.
That's just me though, I'm not looking for a fight.

actually, I assume the records come out the way they do because Walter and Donald want them that way. which is to say, that they feel they have achieved what they set out to achieve. so it's not my assessment, really. they called the records done.
|
well yes
and one might as safely assume that, for example, Kenny G and Rammstein equally make their ecords to the point they are satisfied and deem them "done"
but that is not to say that the records are "perfect" examples of their 'genres'
it's that word PERFECT
that's the part that I believe buys into their hype.
sterile or tweaked to within an inch of its life is not the same thing as "perfect"
