OK I'm on some enforced downtime, to avoid frustration I've come up with a list of all the ways I can think of to check a mix for compatibility without going to far afield...
near-fields
mid-fields
mains
single speaker
PA speaker
Headphones hi-fi
headphones in-ear
car stereo
( I guess mono applies to all of these...)
In a corner
On the studio couch
From another room
in a car
(this section could go on forever...)
over an FM transmiter
Thru a broadcast chain
mp3 - low and high bit rate
AAC - low and high bit rate
Any others?

I like the next room as well.
if it makes sense in another room it's a good sign.
I think this is especially so in non-treated rooms where the early reflections condition your perception (in the room).

Next room, too.
Then the car.
Then home.
Usually, I tell the BAND to listen to it in THEIR cars. That's the TRUE test! That will explain why the drummer keeps saying the kick drum is too boomy - dude has two 4" tweets and 1000w going to a
15" sub! No wonder!!
