The standard of success in life isn't the things. It isn't the money or the stuff. It is absolutely the amount of joy that you feel.

which RTF?
|
The original RTF: Al DiMeola, Chic Corea, Stanley Clark & Lenny White.

I heard via both Stanley Clark and Jean Luc Ponty last year that the original line up was getting together to tour this year. My buddy Kevin Raymond also talked to both Stanley and Al about it and they both confirmed.
It's the same weekend I'm trying to get Paulie to have the next "Helios" get together... June 27th a Friday and the next day is the Jazz fest that RTF are playing at up in Saratoga.

Larry,
Thanks for the heasds up. I think I wore out the grooves in "Hymn of the 7th galaxy" when it was released. If they are playing Saratoga it might be enough to get me to take the ride up to see em.
The original RTF line up had Bill Connors on guitar- right?
I loved his tone and the way his style the meshed with the group. I understand Bill just up and quit the group after the first album- surprising Stanley ( or so he said when i had the chance to ask him about it during a chance meeting at the time).
First time I saw them play was at SUNY Albany in the student union circa 1973 right after that first album was released. Man they were tight- and the music was soo fresh at the time.
Having said that and, as much as I am a fan of Chicks best work, the last time I saw him play (Rochester Jazz fest 2 years ago) the material was just too inaccessible & unstructured even for me.
I hope they have a successfull tour. They deserve it.

I'm ashamed to say I haven't been to a JazzFest post-Katrina. Jazzfest is as much fun as it is possible to have. The famous people are great, but the local guys are never ending wonderful surprise.

The original RTF had NO guitar...first two albums ("Return To Forever" and "Light As A Feather") had Flora Purim and Airto with Joe Farrell as Chicks main foil. Hymn had Bill, then Al.
Larry, that date is PERFECT for our trip to the city. I'd love to see the show too...'cept if Chick doesn't have a Minimoog, I'm gonna be pissed off!

Ross,
You probably dodged a bullet this year. A good friend of mine played, and he called me right before he went on stage. He said it was raining so hard the manhole covers were blowing off the sewers and he was trapped in a single tent all weekend.
I was going to go and visit my friends at Sheffield, (Sheffield records it every year) but couldn't cut loose at the last minute.
Next year.
Best Regards,
Bill

As Bill mentioned, there are recordings of some of the acts each year. You can find them https://www.munckmusic.com/wms/jazzfest/index.html
At the moment, it appears only the Widespread Panic set is available for download, but I imagine they'll have most of the list ready and available by the end of the week.
That 2nd weekend Saturday rainstorm was quite a downpour, but once it rained itself out late morning, the rest of the weekend was gorgeous. I think it rained four out of the seven days of the Fest this year.
The Gentilly neighborhood where the Fairgrounds is located is reclaimed swampland and it doesn't take much rain to return it to its natural state. As a spectator, once you get soaked and filthy it just doesn't seem to matter much--even when it's a mudfest people seem to have a good time. The organizers have estimated 375,000 to 400,000 in attendance, up slightly from last year.

Didn't make it down. I used to work at Jazzfest in the late '80s and I had more fun working it than I do attending. Having my little golf cart and all access helps.
