Crest factor? What, do you want to confuse the masses even more than they already are?
Keep it simple for the unwashed. Heck, they can't even figure out the TV rating system, I know I can't. Movies are easier, you got kids, boobs and FU's, 3 simple catagories to choose from.

Yesterday I helped a friend track bass guitar.
Ran it DI to an LA2A compressor, and only allowed the LA2A to kick in on the most loud notes, and only for a couple of dB reduction.
We ran the bass with and without the LA2A, and with it, it was much bigger.
My friend exclaimed "but I don't see the needle bouncing almost at all"
But, I responded, it DOES sound a lot better than if I did have the needle bouncing....like this...
So I make the LA2A work harder, and the sound just goes to crapola. And the needle is only going to 5-8 dB down, still not overloading the circuit.
I hope I finally taught my friend that overcompression is definitely bad.
Hopefully...

If you don't squash it, XM will.
The "air" vocal affectation is just that. Too many SM58s used for early girl vocal training, and too close, plus "air" are the perfect storm for the bad things that happen in the channel after all the hard work is done. Ever play with an Optimod?

what I'd like to see is a law forbidding anyone with less than 15 years of recording experience from rolling out more than 2 dB at any frequency between 50 Hz and 1000 kHz

Agreed.
Compressors & EQs were designed as solutions to problems, not to give 'artistic freedom'.
Where those problems do not exist, there is no need for solutions.
The subjective approach is as dangerous as it is unreliable, given the state of science & the human aspect.

We've had a huge number of threads like this since the late 90s on various mastering boards and as soon as one pops up, someone jumps off their perch screaming "It's what the artist wanted - they signed off on it. Who are you to legislate artistic freedom?" And around and around it goes again and again. That happens to be disingenuous BS. We all know of many cases where an artist's record as been creamed in mastering due to management, A&R, level-pushing engineers, or simple peer pressure.
Fortunately, news about the damage, even to aggressive music, (especially aggressive music actually) has been all over the music and mainstream press lately. More CDs are coming out with the limiting backed way off (Iron Maiden, Black Crowes, Mudcrutch) and more artists are willing to trust their fans to TURN IT UP and get into music that sounds like music, rather than turning it down and forgetting about it because it grates like sandpaper on the ear.
"Large signals can actually be counterproductive. If I scream at you over the phone, you don’t hear me better. If I shine a bright light in your eyes, you don’t see better.”
Dr. C.T. Rubin, biomechanical engineer

I discovered this new CD by Amos Lee. I'd never heard of this guy, but this is pretty good sounding stuff... Musically. I think the recording was even decent... But the compression is so blatant that during the loud parts, the song sounds like it's out of breath. Pretty decent recording and performance, totally ruined.
