Who can fix the dynamic element of an Altec 639? [message #339485]

Welcome

I just got a pair of Altec Lansing 639s, but the guy sent damaged mics and won't refund my money.

The ribbon seems to work, but not the dynamic aspect.

Does anyone know who can repair this kind of issue?

I assume you've checked all the connections and cleaned the switch at the rear of the mic?
I doubt you can get an exact replacement cartridge unless someone has some spares.
A Shure cartridge from the 55 series probably would be a pretty fair replacement and I think some people still have those available.
The Altec or Western Electric dynamic element wasn't particularly good but it did do the job of making the mic uni-directional.
Good luck in getting them working!

I suggest you contact Bill Hayes at MicroMike Labs (714-774-0342) in Anaheim, CA.

He is the Altec specialist, and has parts to repair 639's, including the dynamic element. He has quite a backlog of work though, so expect delays.
