Ummmm... favorites for what?
Dynamic or condenser?
Figuring the latter, side-fire LDC - Shure KSM32
front-fire, SDC - Shure KSM137 (you could get two for a grand)
front-fire switchable pattern SDC - Shure KSM141
Vocals, acoustic guitars, drum overheads, Leslie cabs, acoustic piano - just about anything. At that price, you could do a lot worse.
YMMV,

Jim,
I've seen you say this a lot of times now. Do you have one fully modded that I can buy? I'm really curious about this and willing to spend the bucks.

Jim,
Is this really a LDC or a side address SDC?
It looks a lot like this:

Let's get one thing straight-I'm not an audio engineer and never said I was. I've just got some things I have to record.(IS)
Announcement: Since smilies are frowned upon by the ACS and it is difficult to detect subtle humor in their absence I will be substituting "(IS)" (implied smiley) where appropriate.

This is a side address, 22 mm capsule, hypercardiode pattern. Same capsule as the MXL 603/4. Same Schoeps style circuit with room insides. It has a flat response to 7k, then a 3db lift at 20k hz. They have about 60 left, then they are gone.

I have to say that the modded SP-1 has become my go-to mic. And I have a choice of many fine mics now. Maybe it just matches my voice.
Want one modded? Act fast.
MCA SP-1 Test
How to get it modded, and I understand he may have some new tricks for the upgrade.
