Not that many women on these lists--as I was pondering this, Laura Nyro's name came to mind. Smile was a regular part of my 2 hour commute to college back in the late 70's.

i like john williams too, but if you listen to holst planets mars bringer of war and the darth vader theme, you may have to take him down one notch, but i do still absolutely love the effect his music has on movies as I watch them, so it is a tough call.

This topics so tough because there has been so many great songs written. I guess I have to give a 3 way tie. John, Paul & Bob Dylan.

John for never been done before, never to be done the same way again. Inventiveness of the lyrics. The best song of them all to me is probably 'I Am The Walrus'. The incredible production Abbey Road as a team brought together. Strange title but it shows me how much possibility there is.

Part of a group of songs Strawberry Fields, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, A Day In the Life.

Also the early days where he and Paul learned to craft songs so fast and effortlessly. They figured it out; how to do it. Like a magic formula that only a few people have. Repeatedly be able to write great songs.

Paul for his incredible work ethic and craft as a songwriter, musician, and in reality producer also. George Martins best student.

Sheryl Crow I think has really mastered the songwriting art. I think having worked with Don Henley had a great influence on her. As well as the great production atmosphere she stepped into in the beginning. She learned well.

Something about making Art has to do with overcoming things, giving us a clear opportunity for doing things in ways we have always known we should do them.

I was going to mention George as well.

A few years ago I was going to get involved in a Beatles cover project. As producer, I listened to pretty much the whole catalog looking for tunes that were lesser known (there weren't any lol)...

BUT what really stuck out was that every tune that made me go "wow" and gave me goose bumps, was a Harrison composition... As a long time Beatles fan this was a real eye opener!

He kicked some serious ass.

I recall a George Martin interview where he was asked about regrets... He said "One of my biggest regrets with the lads was not giving enough attention to Georges songs".

Didn't Jagger/Richards write a decent song or two? Don't think anyone's mentioned them so far?

Personal favourites are Dylan, Randy Newman, Aimee Mann, Tom Waits, Elliott Smith, Brian Wilson. I'm biased but I'd nominate Robyn Hitchcock of the less widely-known writers.

That is a tough chore to pick one in 40 years...
But, I would have to place John Hiatt at the top of my list or at least in the top five.
Damn, there are so many to choose from, Colin Hay, Billy Sherril, John Mellencamp, Lefty Frizzel...I think I spelled that right.
