Dear Folks,
I've been reading and referencing posts on this forum for the past few months, and do really appreciate its open, honest atmosphere. I am an undergraduate student in New York majoring in studio production. I suppose it's time for me to finally ask a question of my own...
Would anybody please be able to give me instructions on how to construct gobos for my home studio? The gobos would be used primarily on drums, although I have no doubt they will be used for the tracking of countless other instruments as well. Preferably on wheels, but certainly not necessary. I'm making the assumption that a gobo with a transparent plexiglass window is much too difficult for me to construct. It would be great if I was wrong. Thank you all for your time.

I cant imagine you could make these for less money than you can buy these.
Well maybe if you have an extensive shop.

You're right, it would depend on your access to a shop. I think I could make those cheaper than the Realtraps, (although the metalwork would add to the cost considerably) but I'm a carpenter with access to a shop for free, so YMMV.
Another factor to consider with the Realtraps is the shipping, which is probably pretty steep with larger, heavier items.

I made about 10 2'x4' gobo's out of 1x6 whitewood and a 3/4" MDF back....
Not sure of the total cost but I think it was about $300 or so not including my time.
I used 2" rigid rockwool (24"x48") covered in burlap for half of them and 3x 2" rockwool batts (24"x48") for the other five.
They are great for mobile baffles and can be stacked to create a "booth".
The MDF sides are of course flat and reflective. I might add some material to the MDF side to change that at some point but it hasn't been a problem.
I also used several of these 24"x48" burlap covered rigid rockwool (framed with 1x2's) to make some clouds for my tracking and control room.
I also plan to use more of those for corner bass traps.
I just ordered about six cases of the things (along with enough burlap to cover them) and have been using them for different treatments.
I think a case of the 24"x48"x2" rigid rockwool is about $60 so it's not really too expensive.
You can get burlap from walmart in a couple different colors cheaper than ordering it online. It (the wal-mart burlap) does seem to have a tighter weave though.
