Rick, what does that look like to YOU? If you had to explain that to a client.
Some people consider anything without a distro thing... a demo.
But, for the band, they're probably going to record like it's their major label debut.
What is it from the other side of the glass that makes it a demo or a "real" recoding? How, in terms of production, do you justify charging someone double?
(This is with straight forward tone, no hidden agenda or argument intended... fucking internet.)

All good Jason. I suppose I was shooting from the hip a little with my post.
What I should have said is that if I am taking it on as a "production gig" as well as me engineering you can expect the bill to be about double.
To me a demo is something we crank out in as little time as possible, with no pre-pro etc. (Although I agree that if no label involved it's a "demo" , there are more independent artists that are bending these rules)
These days I am really trying hard to avoid the "lets just record" crowd and get more involved in producing acts that I think can make a great product...
My reasons behind this is that I was putting out work that I was not happy with (due to time constraint) and seemed to be getting more of the same client-wise. (mid level talent)
Now that I am being more selective and putting MY heart and soul into the recordings, I seem to be attracting better and better musicianship in clients. (High quality artists tend to associate with other talented people, and if the recording is good, then their buddies may give me a call) (It seems to be working)
I'm trying to go the route of "producer with his own studio" as opposed to "studio for hire" these days.
The extra time comes in the form of consultation, pre-production, not settling for inferior takes even if it takes days to get the right one, re-doing stuff until I'm happy, etc etc.
BUT all that said... one has to eat... SO, although I may take the budget gig, I make it clear to potential clients that they will get what they pay for... If you want me to spend extra time making things perfect (which I strongly recommend) then that will cost extra money... (Or we can do fewer songs) But if your insisting on a budget maybe I can squeeze you in. BUT don't expect it to sound as "produced" as "band xxxx" though...
The distinction being a "production" rather than a "recording".
Most of the current CD projects I am working on are 7-8 songs due to this... We drop a few of the lesser songs and put more work into the good ones. (for the same amount of $)
Your CD is better off without the filler anyway.

Replace the word "DEMO" with = (((((Pre-Production))))).
That said, I don't know if I like recording/mixing budget band's records, as much as I love recording.

Also I should mention by saying "it's TOUGH" I was referring to the fact that pumping stuff out for low budget will bite you in the ass due to putting out inferior work. A tough balance that one.

That's a tough one Rick. It seems shitty that we have to battle with our selves, at times, saying "It's good enough", when the pay is not enough or we are at the end of our wits. I'm kind of fighting that as we speak.
Gotta push push puSH, no sleep,no eat, no beer and make it as good as it can be... no matter what!!! That's a tough one indeed. AHHHH!!!!!!

I don't know about that. As hard as it can be to put something out with your name on it knowing that it's not your best work, I think if the band abuses a discounted rate, or demands longer hours, I have no problem with saying no. I just recently learned that lesson.
