Great Group Buy News!
TNC announce Custom wound transformers for TNC microphones, at Group Buy Special Prices!
TNC have now arranged to offer transformers custom designed and hand wound for specific models of the TNC microphones. Also in the works are drop-in replacement electronics that will be designed to even better utilise the capabilities of the stock capsules, and also to integrate with certain of the custom transformers.
Transformers are designed and manufactured by AMI/TAB-Funkenwerk in Gaylord, Kansas, by Mr. Oliver Archut.
Electronics are being custom designed by Lucas Engineering technicians. They will be manufactured in the USA or the Bahamas, and will be available soon. We will also have available upgraded "pre-modified" microphones in each style, at some point in the near future.
TRANSFORMERS:
*Model ACM 1/2 ($75) This transformer is purposefully made for exact replacement in the ACM-1 or the ACM-2 ribbon mics.
*Model ACM3 ($65) Exact upgrade replacement for the ACM-3 ribbon mic.
(The stock ribbon mics all now share the same stock Chinese transformer. The replacement transformers have the same exact ratio, but the resonance and the high end response are tuned for each given mic.)
*Model T14-1200 ($75) Exact drop in replacement for stock ACM-1200. No electronics modifications necessary.
*Model T14-C12 ($75) Replacement transformer for ACM-1200, but can only be coupled with the custom C12-based electronics PC board upgrade (now in design by Lucas techs, but based on Oliver's original design parameters for the C12VR upgrade electronics).
(The T14-1200 transformers are based on the Hiller T14-C12 transformer (ratio 12 to 1), as used in early C12 mics, but have the ratio of 9 to 1 as used in the stock ACM-1200.)
*Model T47 ($85) Replacement transformer for ACM-1200 with U47-like transformer characteristics (BV8), but can only be coupled with the custom "47" electronics PC board upgrade (now in design by Lucas techs, and based on a simplified 47-inspired electronics circuit).
*Model T49 ($85) Replacement transformer for ACM-1200 with UM49-like transformer characteristics, but can only be coupled with the custom "49" electronics PC board upgrade (now in design by Lucas techs, based on a simplified 49-inspired electronics circuit).
*Model T67 ($90) Replacement transformer for ACM-1200 with U67-like transformer characteristics, but can only be coupled with the custom "67" electronics PC board upgrade (now in design by Lucas techs, based on a simplified 67-inspired electronics circuit).
(The 47-49-67 transformers are based on a Neumann-inspired transformer. They come in the three different ratios of 6:1 for 47-styled electronics, 10:1 for 49-styled electronics, and 7:1 / with feedback winding for 67-styled electronics.)
To order as part of the Group Buy, email to
tnc-transformers@compasspointstudios.com
Include name, shipping address, and payment information. Paypal capability is being worked out now, hopefully coming soon. For immediate orders, you can use a credit card.
We will try to answer questions, but be advised that our emails are going crazy, and there is so much to do on this "little" Group Buy that we have to focus first on shipments!
Please keep all commercial transactions off of the Forum.
All of this should make for a lot of fun and experimentation! We will try to put together a couple of youtube videos that show how to modify, and especially, how NOT to modify (ie, kill yourself).
Enjoy!

Fascinating Captain!
Any idea how much the electronics board upgrades are gonna cost that are designed to go with the custom transformers?
And how would that affect if we upgraded to a better capsule?

I'll check for my invoice every. Thanks Chance for using USPS I know It's a lot more trouble but I have had such a pain with the brokerage methods of the commercial shipping companies.

LI, Honestly, I wouldn't upgrade the capsule.
Despite what a couple of people have said, I find the capsule pretty decent.
It *might* be that they have not tried these new capsules from China, and are relying in past experiences. And maybe not.
Certainly by far the weakest parts are the transformer and electronics.
These capsules may not have *exactly* the same sound as a CK12 or M7 or whatever, but they do have a decently balanced sound, and most importantly, good resolution.
They just keep getting better over there at making capsules.

this is awesome. i'll definitely be in for a good chunk of replacement transformers.
on the electronics upgrade-will this be released as just a BOM and instructions in typical DIY form? that would be great-then i can order parts for all the mics in one fell swoop.
