I make great cables. I can solder a patchbay. But I don't know jack OR shit about what it takes to mod these mics! Am I screwed? I'm gonna need explicit instructions, because I can tell by Seņor Oliver's post that I'm up to my eyeballs in caca on this.

Jota-Tejas,
I've helped rack a few pres, stuffed a few PCBs etc, so know that I'm close to your experience level, which is why I'm responding to encourage you.
In my estimation, judging from Terry's C12VR thread, and other anecdotal knowledge, I'm guessing that these circuits will be relatively simple in terms of component count (compared to say, a GSSL or something) and that the PCBs will be pretty easy to stuff.
If the PCBs are silkscreened with component values it's slightly harder to eff up (at least at my neanderthal level,) but it's not really that important.
If you lurk on some of the mic build/mod threads over at The Lab you'll be able to improve your understanding of what a project like this will require. There are clues to be found here at REP as well, the C12VR thread for example.
I'm kicking myself for not ordering a 1200... now, should I buy the upgrade kit and transformer and just assume I can eventually get my hands on a mic? Hmmm.

I can't even imagine how much work it must have been for you to organize and execute all this Chance. I hope you take a much deserved vacation someplace nice after it's all over.

I am pretty sure the boards for electronics replacement are going to come all made up with all components mounted on them already. The work required, if one does one's own mods, will be to mount it all in there. But I will check to verify this.
Changing the trans is relatively easy, the pcb will be a bit more.
The tubes, of course are in sockets.

Thanks, Terry - that sounds great!
Any word yet on whether the PCB upgrades will work with other "1200-style" mics (Apex 460, Nady TCM1150, Carvin CM100, etc)? Also, any more info on 6802T upgrades?
Thanks in advance... (fingers crossed)
Stuff I'm Selling: Pair Oktava MK-012 (Sold), Audix i5, Alesis/GT AM62, EV 626, 3x Audio Technica AT831 lavaliers, Vox AC30 Amp Cover. PM me for info, pics, etc.

| Oliver Archut wrote on Wed, 19 November 2008 00:16 | Hello Guys,
thanks to Terry and Chance for having me here, after the C12VR mod Terry asked me if I TNC could use the circuit for the 1200 and after talking circuit, tubes and foremost x-former, we worked out a couple of x-former for more than just the 1200 mics.
Terry already posted what type is available and I will start to ship the first x-former tomorrow.
Here is what is available and shipping right now.
T14-C12 the standard Hiller type x-former used in the very early C12 and some 250/251. Ratio 12 to 1 with a 200 Ohm output and works best with either a 12AT7 (the best is still the Telefunken ECC81 or the one and only tube to use in C12 type of mics the ECC801s) of course the 6072a will work too, but the price these days is ridicules. So after working with Terry on an other tube type project I tried to get around the 6072a and found a bunch of NOS tubes that will work either as a direct replacement or with a few minor changes like pin layout. Tubes like the 12AV7 and 6060 only cost a few bucks and work as good some even better than the 6072a. The T14-C12 is either for a self build project a la C12/251 or for the upgrade electronics that will be available soon. As a hint, a 5kOhm trim pot for the cathode will make the life easier to get the sweet spot for any of the listed tube above.
The 14-1200 is an standard upgrade for the stock electronics (aside the changed ratio it is identical to the C12-T14) aside a higher resolution it also smoothen out the high end as well making the low end a bit more robust. With a change in coupling cap (any foil type will do better than the stock one) and tube the stock circuit will work even better. 6BK7B, 6BQ7A, 6DT8{in my opinion the best, love the GE}, 6BS8 need to change the pin layout, open connection pin 4 and 5, move pin 9 to pin 5 and ground pin 9 via a 100pF cap. Tubes like the 12AV7 and 6060, are an direct replacement and get the stock electronic to an entire different level. I think I bought mine for around $1.50 each.
The T47/49/67 are designed for the upgraded electronics, those x-former are only Neumann inspired and in order to keep the price low are made with standard available lamination (other than the BV8/11/12 were the lamination is made here in Gaylord/KS) and wound on fully automated winding equipment. In conjunction with the upgrade electronics they really get the china made capsule singing, but also good for any kind of self build project that is based upon one of the classic Neumann's.
After talking with The Terry and seeing what is possible from a technical point of view there are several tubes that will work. Currently the T47 is ready for shipping, T49/67 will follow with tube upgrade info within a week. Here are the tube that will work for the 47 mod.
EF80/6BX6/Z719, EF184/6EJ7, 6BW7, 6EL7, EF860, still checking other ones.
For the ribbon mics I am currently waiting for the lamination, they should be ready to ship within two weeks.
Please order VIA tnc-transformers@compasspointstudios.com , all orders are forwarded to AMI and shipped here from Gaylord/KS, a handling fee of $5 is added to any whole (1 to xx x-formers) order, plus the actual shipping fee. Continental US UPS only, outside the continental US USPS airmail only. Payment Credit Card (preferred) e-mail phone number if you do not want to mail the CC number or PayPal, check or MO are possible too, do not send cash and no personal pic up!
I will try answer all question as fast as possible.
Best regards,
|
Oliver
Great info! So much appreciated, thank you. When you get moment could you give a run down of the tranny's for the ribbons as you did here?
I'd also love to see something for the ACM-900 in the way of mods in the future. Even though I've yet hear them it seems a good candidate.

We have a 900 heading towards Oliver right now, along with a couple of the other models, so that TAB-F can start designing the custom transformers!
