Hey folks,
Early last year, I signed a deal with Clavia to provide them the entire Mellotron Library for a new instrument that they had in mind. They have also licensed the "Mellotron" trademark for this specific use.
What they have come up with is really great. It's called "The Wave" and I just finished a week of living with one here in the studio. I'll let the specs speak for themselves, but it really sounds great. I am not crazy about ALL of the patches that they have assembled for the presets as shipped...but those are easily tweaked towards perfection. They did a fine job of sampling, organizing and optimizing these sounds. If you're going to NAMM, check it out. Load up one of the Tron patches and have the demo guy show you how to access the raw sample data in one of the two voice slots. Very nice. Every note sampled, high rates and bit depth, from the master tapes.
This is NOT, in any way, in my financial interest to post. We were paid, up front, for this license, If anything, sales of our Mellotron CD ROM will go down with the success of this instrument, but we've had a good run with that disk. I get lots of questions about what hardware/softsampler etc. is required to use the disk...the Wave EASY to use and has tons of other great sounds and features ready to go. It's light, smallish, stylish and should fit the bill if you've ever lusted for these sounds.
The did do ONE thing wrong though- no Chamberlin sounds! Silly.

Sounds like a great idea! I started to download the sounds, but it would have taken a while for me. I love the Mellotron....I think that there's one guy, locally, that has one, but it's not for public use/ rental, and is a bit of a legend.

Sounds good, very promising. I was ALWAYS waiting for someone to make a standalone box that had Mello sounds (someone DID and despite the crap quality, it did ok). This sounds like a more useful unit for the masses, I need something like it and will fully check it out.
Once upon a time, I had an Ensoniq EPS sampler. That darn thing was FAST and EASY, you could slam sounds into it and edit with wonderful ease. Again, technology gave us 2000 more options and now they are all hard to use....

What great news. There are a bunch of Mellotrons in Austin (I saw five at one well-known enthusiast's Christmas party last week) but I've never recorded one so this will be the next best thing.

Didn't the Mellotron use tape reels? I recall hearing somewhere that there were some people that disliked the unreliability and warble of those tapes.

>>If you think the EPS was easy, you should try a Mirage. The only word I can use to describe it is: featureless.<<
The old EPS was easy, easiest sampler ever! The Mirage is a beast of toughness. Almost impossible to use. They don't really compare in any way...
It wasn't the LACK of features that made it great - it was HOW they implemented the few they had. The main things you need (and STILL need) were accessible FAST and immediately.
