Well, I had a rough few days (like living a really dramatic movie), and low and behold some NEW music has really lifted my spirits... inspired me a bit.
I bought 3 new cds and can't get enough of them. Every listen is better than the last...
Ween - La Cucaracha
North Mississippi Allstars - Hernando
Widespread Panic - Free Somehow
The production values are outstanding... the Mastering is not too harsh, and the music is uplifting...
Hasn't happened to me in a while...
Anything else out there that's THAT good?

I could go on forever, but some albums that I liked in 2007 that I think people would like here (ie: I omitted the metal and punk records, because let's face it, this is an old fogey board )
-Jason Falkner, "I'm Ok, You're Ok" (great powerpop, kinda more XTC Joe Jackson-y on this one)
-Grinderman. Maybe a tad more abrasive than people would like here, but it's really dark, messed up soul. It's Nick Cave (Bad Seeds) and Warren Ellis (Dirty Three) and a couple of other guys creating soul music for soul music lovers who are sick of soul. I didn't like it at first....and you probably won't either, but "When My Love Comes Down" is equal parts Marvin Gaye meets the Stooges with a heart full of jilted loverfuck gone wrong. This album is that good, and it only keeps on getting better with each listen.
-Kevin Kane, "How To Build A Lighthouse". Beatles/ Big Star sorta stuff....his last full length was 11 or so years ago, so it was long overdue and it doesn't disappoint! Plus, two out of two Ryans on PSW give it the thumbs up (the other one being Moore)...how can you go wrong?
-Sloan, "Never Hear The End Of It". Technically a 2006 release, but YepRoc released it as a double album last year. Take all your favorite powerpop albums of the 70's (Dwight Twilley, Raspberries, etc, plus some Fleetwood Mac and CSNY) and cram 'em into 76 minutes and 30 songs and you get this. Plus, the sound is really intimate...it's well captured, but it sounds like a 70's recording in production, which suits it well. Plus, all the songs merge into each other, creating the sense that it's one big pop song. Some songs are more like snippets (ie: one minute long) and they sort of fizzle out before their logical conclusion, but i'm pretty sure that they meant it that way, to sound like vignettes or pop interludes among the other pop masterpieces. Plus, you get four songwriters and singers all chipping in with their best work to compete with each other's--sometimes exclusively singing on their own songs, harmonizing, or all of them singing stanzas on "Flying High Again" (the most CSNY track on the album). Check it out, it's that good, and one of the few true "already classic" albums that i've heard in the last long while.

Product Description
Kevin Kane is one half of the singer/songwriter team that was The Grapes of Wrath, one of the first success stories for Nettwerk Management signed to Capitol Records worldwide in the mid '80s. The Grapes brand of elegant understated pop pre-dated today's return to earthier harmonic roots pop. Kevin Kane does not disappoint. This CD is exactly how you'd expect a Grapes of Wrath CD to sound like today. Featuring drumming by Nelson Bragg (Brian Wilson) and mastering by Kramer. Includes a wonderful cover of ""Arnold Layne"" by Pink Floyd.

Kevin Kane
How To Build A Lighthouse
By Jason Schneider
It’s always been unusual how low a profile Kevin Kane has had since the drawn-out demise of the Grapes Of Wrath in 2001. With only one previous solo album, the extremely subdued Neighbourhood Watch, he seemed content to have his one-time position as Vancouver’s leading power pop auteur usurped by Carl Newman. Now, finally, there’s How To Build A Lighthouse, a true return to form with instantly infectious melodies wrapped up in spacey, psych-tinged arrangements. While Kane’s voice shows no signs of age, there is a noticeable darkness over much of the album that has come with maturity. “Late Night” and “Closer” swirl with this attitude, although several other songs like “No Postcards” hum along like Teenage Fanclub at their sunniest. Throw in an excellent cover of Pink Floyd’s “Arnold Layne” and How To Build A Lighthouse adds up to quintessential Kevin Kane, which should appeal to not just Grapes of Wrath fans. (Bongo Beat)

IMO he's writing and playing better now than in the gold-record days of his old outfit the Grapes Of Wrath..

I totally agree!
Do you have that super rare "Timmy Loved Judas Priest? I think I have #80 of #500....totally struck me by surprise, it was in the record store at the time. Neko Case sings background on one track.

Have no idea, haven been producing pop music day in day out for more than a year or so. No good music there to find, notes and lyrics mean nothing to me but that´s the way pop goes nowadays right?
To stay in balance I listen to Tom Waits (Rain Dogs preferred), Jeff Buckley, Otis Redding, all the Stax Stuff, Elmore James, the Charlatans, the Doves, the Smith and many more. Besides that I write stuff and record it whenever possible. A lot of things you have to do to get over the emptiness of today´s pop music. Sad.
cheers
