I would like to spend around $5G on a great mic and preamp for my recording studio. This will be my first expensive mic. Right now I have a Rode NT2a and AT 4030 and I use a DBX 386 for the pre *sigh*
If you could only get one mic and one preamp around this price range - what would you choose? It has to be a do-it-all mic - for vocal and instrument recordings.
Thanks, Chony
Btw, I'm happy to spend less too; the most important thing is that it is a very high quality all purpose mic and pre.

How about a pair of microphones? I'd go with the Gene Lawson's "combo" system, which allows you to mix his versions of Neumann U47 and Telefunken ELA M251 capsules on a tube body and a FET body. Thus, you have 4 microphone configurations available, although only 2 at a time (either L47 + L251FET or L47FET + L251). Cost is $3,390.
After that, I'd consider something like a Rupert Neve Portico 5012-H dual preamp ($1,650 at Mercenary) or maybe the single-channel Portico ($1,100) plus a Groove Tubes "Brick" preamp ($400).
I would have recommended the original Great River MP-2 preamp over these combinations, but it appears to no longer be in manufacture. Bummer.
While these suggestions meet your budget, they probably sacrifice a tiny bit of excellence in favor of far more versatility as compared to "the best" single mic and preamp combo you'll find. (Of course, "the best" is a highly personal thing.)

While one pre (or one mic) doesn't fit everything,
if you had a Modular Pre-Amp that can change it's
fundamental color and texture, then it might be a
bit more 'broad-band' in it's applications-set.
So if you had a modular microphone And a modular pre-amp,
then One Size Might Fit ALMOST All, at least theoretically.

Great River and Korby are both great products. Fabulous, really!
That said, the AP series Pre allows you to change both
the Op-Amp and Input Transformer to suit your needs.
And soon-to-be-released 3 Sigma C.H.I. System Modular Microphone
allows you to have both Small And Large Diameter Capsules use
the same Super-Low-Noise Head-Amp. Total Modularity on both sides
of the analog signal-chain has been a five year quest of ours. . .
So, while folks would like to pigeon-hole ADK as Low to Mid Price-Point
Gear, we do have unique High-End Products worth checking out!

Daking is also a fabulous product!
You can take that opinion with a saline solution as needed....

My other thoughts on the pre-amp side are this:
There are sublime high-end choices.
But High or Mid-priced, a studio needs at least one or two valves.
If I were left on a desert island I'd take a Hamburg, a Vienna,
and a Stereo A Designs and carve some very fine acoustic tracks!
And have money left over for coconuts. . . .
Cheers !!!

Isn't this supposed to be the budjet forum?
Those prices are a bit into the high end, don't you think?
