In about a month, I will tell you what I think is exactly what you need to know.

The 92.1 uses a different tube, and the circuitry is adjusted relative to that.
These mics are always pretty good, but can be great if modifications are made. The biggest drawback is their transformer, where they cheesed out pretty bad.
If you get an AMI/TAB trans,, and do some pcb mods, the mic becomes pretty awesome.

They consider themselves the *real* Neumann, and in fact, that is probably closest to the truth.
But they don't have transformers down.

| Haolemon wrote on Wed, 01 October 2008 18:03 | I used to have a pair of M300s which I really liked. But since I also have pairs of Schoeps, Josephson series 6, KM84/83/85 I sold them.
I also have a pair of UMT70S which I love. M7 capsule, sort of a transformerless U87 (I know I will hear about this statement) in terms of its pattern, pads, etc. These are very versatile and sound good on many things.
The build quality on the Gefell mics is extremely high. The older ones, built when they were still behind the Iron Curtain, sometimes have problems because of substandard parts. Today that is not an issue.
Plus the company is owned by the Neumann family and Neumann is owned by Sennheiser.

I have a pair of UMT70S as well. I find them to sound very good on a variety of sources. They're definitely a go to mic for me.

I've been using a pair of UM900s since they first were offered by MTG. A couple of notes - they seem to like having their own dedicated phantom power supplies where there is ample current available. They have a 30 ohm output impedance (vs. approx. 200 ohm for most US condenser mics) and perform best with a preamp that is properly matched for a low impedance input.
I've put them up against an all original U47 from '56 with a PVC M7 and the mids were quite similar. There was more bottom and top in the UM900s, possibly due to the natural aging of the PVC membrane and the caps in the U47.
Going out on a limb, I'd say a UM900 is probably about as close as you can get to an "as-new" 1950s U47 in a mic today.

This explains why I like that mic most with the "Loading" button in on the Great River pre. Still, I haven't exactly heard a preamp not make that mic sound awesome, all impedance aside.
