I had that done once but I can tell you it didn't really thrill me having my ears at the mercy of & the procedure done by some assistant secretary who did maybe a 1 week 'doctors office reception assistant' course after high school..
Blasting warm water into my ear canal with an immense syringe type thing.
Also - it hurt like hell too..not too cool.
Sometimes I think they are too stuck in the middle ages with dentistry & medical practices here..
How do they do it over in the USA?

Also very applicable if you are using in-ear monitors. My method is to use a 30-50 ml syringe (take the needle off please) and warm water. Others use oil, but I find that too messy. Kind of a wet topic, but necessary. No need to see your doctor for this, unless you haven't been there for a good while.

For those that are interested it's pretty easy. You pick up a little "ear kit" at the pharmacy or large grocery store for about $10. It contains a little blue ball-squirter thing and a bottle of carbamide peroxide. Brands typically found are Debrox or Murine. You put a couple drops in your ear and lie down on your side. For about 15 minutes you'll hear it bubble and fizz away, coagulating the ear wax into a ball of pretty nasty looking orange goo complete with hairs sticking out, etc. You then squirt warm water into the ear with the little squirter and hold your head sideways and the gunk comes out. It is advised to complete the process by flushing the ear with some rubbing alcohol to get rid of the water (to prevent ear infections).
This method works very well from my experience.

I know I'm about to get blasted here, but how bad is it that I'm a compulsive ear q-tip user? It's not that I'm trying clean my ears that much as it is that I get itches in my ears and use the q-tips to scratch them.
My hearing is still great. I get it tested at least once a year, but I've done this for several years.

Perfect timing or what ?
I'm recently having a bit of trouble with my right ear. There is something lodged in there that is occasionally causing a somewhat hollow, low frequency tone. Either that or I'm losing my mind (which is quite possible).
I asked my wife to listen for it and she doesn't hear a thing so it must be me.
I put up a mic and PAZ in the studio to see if it would pick it up but so far nothing conclusive. That is, it still must be something in my head.
I've tried the Hydrogen Peroxide and a warm water flush but so far no luck. I'll go to Shoppers Drug Mart and see if I can pick up something more "industrial."

Low frequency tinnitus. That has got to be a PITE. (pain it the ear!)
How about when you are falling asleep? Do you hear anything. If I have any tinnitus at all, this is the time when I can find it. I have done much study of tinnitus and to really get a grip on it, use some headphones and play music only on the left channel at moderate volume and "see" if the tinnitus come "up" in the affected ear... because if that is what it is, it certainly will, in the right ear. Providing stimulus to the opposite ear will cause the ear with the issue to raise the tinnitus to audible levels. Works every time.
Their are some rather obscure processes for taming and almost eleminating tinnitus.
Be happy to email you a ton of resources if you like.

Tom,
How do I say, ... err... umm... "not so good?"
Scratching your ear canal with a Q-tip is ill advised, though I understand the feeling. Part of this is probably that you keep exposing the nerves by scratching off the skin, etc. I think you want to be really careful of this - it also exposes you to more ear infections.
