You can't go wrong with either The Lavry Black or the Benchmark. They are both stellar DACs. You also may want to think about the Dangerous D-box. You get a great DAC and a bunch of other stuff that really comes in handy.

I think it depends on the program material. We spent about a couple of hours listening between the two and found they both sounded amazing some better on certain material. For monitoring, I still prefer the $1000 benchmark or lavry than my $8000 dCS.
IMO, I think if your Lavry Black sounds dramatically better than the Benchmark then there is something wrong with your Benchmark. Course, different strokes....

i owned a Benchmark 1st too and then demo'd a Lavry Black. at first, my impression was that the sound stage or presence of the Benchmark was better and i liked that. but after awhile i realized that this was great for casual listening, but not for critical decisions.
the Black was much easier to make critical decisions on, particularly in the mids. there were tracks i worked on where i felt they sounded fine on the Benchmark and then would double-check them on the Black and couldn't believe i missed stuff, especially on vocals. it was very revealing.
so IMO, the decision is easy for an engineer. don't be fooled by just listening. USE both on work and then make the decision. i think, like me, you'll find yourself correcting things using the Lavry Black that you missed on the Benchmark.

Slightly off topic [as its not in the poll and over budget] but head to head [pun intended] on straight DA conversion, for me, the Hedd 192 beats the Lavry Black.
I've had a Hedd on loan this week as I'm looking to upgrade my analogue loop, and the difference to me is clear. So I'll have to stump up for the Hedd.
It's been interesting listening to level matched outputs from 3 DAs: Digi 192, Lavry and Hedd
The Lavry sounds good, the Hedd is just that bit better: soundstage more defined, the top cleaner and a little less 'shrill' for want of a better word, and the bass better. What shocked me most is how much worse the Digi 192 sounds than either. I'd forgotten! its been such a long time since I listened to the analogue out of the 192.

I still can't figure out how anyone can objectively compare convertors based on a "shoot out" rather than simply listening for differences to a reference source, but that's just me..
and maybe a few others...
