Hi,
I'm a baritone male (with bass overtones) with some upcoming pure-voice projects (ranging from narration/audiobooks to hard-rock commercials) and am trying to grasp the merits of the above two preamps/processors.
Would you have an opinion/rationale regarding the advantages/disadvantages of these two units for my voiceover applications? (If you also have a viewpoint regarding a matching mic, please feel free...)
Thanks!
Sincerely,
Kevin

So here's my dilemma....
I have $1k to spend on monitors, but I have a specific limitation. The place I work has given me an award which is worth $1k at Amazon.com.... so that's where I have to spend the money.
What is available at amazon.com that is worth a damn:
Dynaudio BM5 passive
Dynaudio BM5a (active)
KRK VXT 6
Event Studio Precision 6
Mackie HR624mk2
I do NOT need power, but everything I'm seeing is active except the Dynaudios...
Unfortunately, I cannot just try 'em out because my local dealer doesn't have the KRK or Dynaudios (plus I have an ethical problem with going to my local guy and testing monitors knowing I won't buy from them).
Obviously, it's a personal decision, but my question is what would YOU choose...
If it matters, I do a wide variety of music... ambient pop/rock, acoustic, etc. I currently have Tannoy Reveals (original version) passive.
I know what I WOULD do after hearing them... I'd buy the Adam A-7, but it's not available from Amazon.
Thanks y'all...

i bought this mic for acoustic guitar recording. First i touched base with the company with some general questions, i often do this just to see if i get a response (i am still waiting on tascam to get back to me on the porta studio question i had in 87 - haha)
the company wrote me back the next day and answered all my general questions about this mic and acoustic guitar recording. nothing in depth here, just wanted to see if i would get a response. so far so good.
so i bought it from sweetwater, it arrived 2 days later
you get a very nice aluminum case
the mic
2 spare capsules
shock mount
30 foot mic cable
power supply
manual
all for 499 bucks
so how does it sound? i put it up on my taylor 314 in my room (non treated spare room in house) and started banging pretty hard with a heavy gauge pic, the sound (once i moved the mic back about 9 inches from the 12th fret pointing towards the sound hole) was crisp and clear, nice bottom end without distoring and crisp top end i had been missing WITHOUT the pic scrap shriek i always expereinced with my 22 251 positioned ANYWHERE (meaning close, 3 feet away, behind me, over the shoulder etc)
i am running it thru an API 512c -RNC -RME FF 800 44.1/24/256 into cubase 4.1
finger picking, which sounds pretty good on my 22 251 was also very nice and detailed.
i emailed the company about the other capsules and they suggested one of the other ones (can't remember which one now) would be even better on acoustic
the mic itself is heavy and really nicely made (as far as i can tell), its solid and looks pretty nice. not sure if i love the burgandy color but whatever.
5 year warranty
customer service has been stellar.
i am looking at the CV=12 now for some vocals. that in addition to the cham labs mics and "for me" along with possibly a pearlman with a u47 somewhere down the affordable road will pretty much take care of any and all needs i might have
my mics now
22 251 peluso
avantone cv-28
fat head
MXL something or other 990 i think?
Baby Bluebird
anyway just wanted to post this in case any other home guys might be wanting something cost effective and pretty darn good for acoustic guitar

HI. Just wondered if anyone have used any of the CAD trion 6000/8000 series? I bought both and was surprised at how good they sounded
I trie different tubes in the 8000 and settled for a nos GE tube.
Took some time to find what tube the Chinese 6j1 was, but as it turned out it is a EF95 / 6ak5 tube.
The sound of both mics sounded to me very even, but others may have other views. Always a bit difficult to like something that's so cheap. Around 200$ each on Ebay.
Best from Oddvar.

Hello
Just got another Topaz 8, 24 channel board a few weeks back for a rediculous price. I used to own one several years ago but got rid of it some time past. I couldn't pass this up for the price, besides it's all in good working order and included the meter bridge. Even got the darn manual with it. I have just a few questions if anyone might know. . On page 43 of the operating manual (The Masters) it states that the L & R faders for the masters control the mix signal at the Main mix outputs, which are unbalanced on 0.25 jacks. It also says somewhere else in the manual that the Main mix output is factory set for +4. All other outputs factory set for -10.
I'd forgotten a lot about my old Topaz but was surprised that the Main mix are on unbalanced outputs to begin with. I know you can mod the 24 tape in/outs for +4 or -10 operation as well as the two track in and outs for -4/ -10, but the way they show hooking up the console, it appears as if what they consider to be the two track outs. . . are really the Main mix outs connected to (two) 2 track machines by use of a Y-cord to feed the 2Trk-A & 2Trk-B mastering decks. . . . so, are they in fact saying that the Main mix outs are also considered to be the 2 trak outs. and that
they can be altered to be either +4/-10 if wanted along with the 2 track ins?? It's a little confusing at first glance.
Again, shouldn't the main mix out on a board of this quality be on a balanced connection and not on an unbalanced one. After all it says that the Main out is set for +4 to start from the factory and I would think you'd want that to be on a balanced out for professional level matching purposes? Those internal jumpers are a real pain in the ass! I like Mackies use of simple switches for +4/-10 select on the tape ins & outs as well as on the Main mix outs. Way more user friendly.
Only real serious complaint I'd have about the console is about it's lousy Aux implementation. The first 2 should have had a pre/post switch so you could have at least 4 full post effects if wanted. The other shared 2 shared aux's are a waste if you ask me. . . having them all separate would be much better but then the console would have had to have been made deeper in design to accomodate two extra knobs going down the strip. maybe even deeper if you throw in the room for the pre/post switches on the first two aux knobs and that would of course bring added costs to the whole desk? Anyway. . . .it's a great sounding little desk. The preamps are good enough to get the job done and the board is very quiet! The EQ seems useful and pretty well implemented. . . so far I'm really liking it.
Thanks,
Al Levin

Hi all, I am new to the forum. I posted this in a another thread and then I realized I may have been in the wrong place and way over my head!! Hopefully this question better posted here. If anyone has time please feel free to give your opinion on this stuff. I have posted a lot of questions here.
I have been doing my own recordings for a couple years but I still have a lot to learn. Ok so all is well and then.......after my tracks are laid and my sound is really good (I have tons of work in it). Things then begin to go awry.
I think I may have made a mistake, buying the zoom Mrs-8? Trying to work on a budget and getting all the bells and whistles. It has an SD card. Don't know if the card or the equipment is failing or I have inadvertently changed a setting?
When I apply an effect to a particular track it works great! But...when I go to change the effect on a different track. It also changes the previous track. My settings will not stay there! I am soo frustrated and have tried seemingly everything to correct this. Should I throw the board in the trash? I do not want to lose my work but reality is the machine may be hosed.
I am opting for a medium priced DWS with a hard drive, phantom,
and more tracks than I have. Any suggestions on something reliable and more user friendly? Thank you!!! I appreciated finding a forum like this one.

Mesa Boogie Walkabout Scout
Hi All, I'm pretty sure I'm going to pick up one of these for the studio tomorrow... Just wondering if anyone has any studio experience with these and may have any comments. Negative or positive?
I played one at the local banjo mart and have been lusting ever since....

I have been trying to dump MIDI Sysex data from one DR-660 to another, and while song data is transferring, the drum pattern data is not. Has anyone else ever had this problem with these units?

Have any of you taken an Electrovoice/Blue Cardinal condenser mic for a test drive? Your thoughts? Anyone test them for overheads?
Thanks much in advance!

Hi,
I'm recording some roughish demos at the moment, and for most tracks I've made a drum loop or two, then done overdubs on top, and it sounds OK. However, one song has a rhythm that alternates between a very swung Fela Kuti type thing and a straighter disco part. Any attempt to do drum loops first absolutely kills the groove of the thing.
I've decided to record the basic acoustic guitar track first, then put some drums on top. I'd like to use my computer keyboard as a MIDI keyboard/etc to overdub drum samples on top in real-time, just to flesh out the thing a bit more.
Is this possible? I've heard of some freeware thing that basically makes your PC keyboard spit out MIDI data, but I can't seem to find it. I'm using Tracktion 2 on the PC.

i'm looking at picking up a pair of the m-audio solaris microphones, for stereo direct-to-disk recordings... been saving up for a pair of akg c 414b-xls, but its taking forever...
i am looking for a mic that is very neutral and unhyped (like my avensons, but with way less noise and way more flexibility).
the specs are great... 14 dbA noise figure, 3 polar patterns, +/- 1 dB across the audible range, transformer output..... and the reviews so far have been great...
any users/recommenders/dissers here?
thanks,

Hey All > I am in the painful process of trying to move my project studio up the food chain a bit. I am more composer producer than engineer and want some insight on best use (given my limited options) of my current pres and mics to set up a sort of "hard wired" option for fast, basic recording of... 1. acoustic upright piano (stereo), 2. acoustic guitar, 3. 2 Electric Guitar Amps, 4. 2 room mics 5. Tracking Stereo Synths to disc.
My current pres: - Presonus MP-20, Aphex 107, DAV BG-1, Gaines Audio MP-2, M-audio Tampa, ART Dual MP, ART V3
My Mics: RODE NT1's (2), Senny 421's (2), CAD M-179, Joe Meek 47, Oktava 219, Studio Projects C1
OUTBOARD COMPRESSION: RNC, APHEX Compellor, Presonus AP-22
I am open to adding to and switching some stuff out, but feel like, for most of the recording I do, that I could have a decent hard wired in solution that would allow for change, but work pretty well as a default base to start from. The Piano should be always miked and the guitar amps as well. Vocals I can fool around more with.
I have had decent luck with the Studio projects C1 on Acoustic guitar (Joe Meek not bad on AGT either) and with the CAD M-179 set to omni on the upright piano.
Sorry for the long post. Ideas?
thx, soundscore

I have an old SM58 left over from a band I was in in the '80s that appeared to be dead for all intents and purposes, but I recently opened it up and it came back to life for some reason.
After taking the windscreen off it was clear that all the foam was disintegrating and had totally clogged up the capsule. After blowing off the foam bits and plugging it in it works again.
I know nothing about the inner workings and maintenance of mics, and I'm not sure if it was a bad connection or if these foam particles had anything to do with it not working, but my question is...what is the best way to clean out all the particles without causing damage?
Also, how similar is the SM58 to the SM57? I was going to go out and buy a new SM57 to try experimenting with micing my guitar cabinet, but I thought since I had this old SM58 lying around, I'd try to get something out of this first. Waste of time?
Thanks.
