We're cleaning house a bit, which includes selling our copy of DP3 for peanuts-- I'm having a hard time figuring out how to transfer the license to the buyer.
Anyone able to comment?
Thx.

Hey all,
Been digging though my harddrive, and came across a project I worked on about 4.5 years ago ... it was my 2nd recording effort ever. This is a friend of mine's band. They claimed their influences were Cold Play and Joy Division, and they wanted a similar sound. Take a listen to a sample of the tracks, and see if I got anywhere near that
In any case, I'm actually pretty surprised how good it sounds for what it is ... old Gadget Labs cards, and Behr gear recorded in N-Track in my basement Obviously, no click or anything was used.

Hi all,
got a friend of mine coming out with his second record in US via Steam Machine Records. Band name is VanCleef Continental, and the album title is Red Sisters. I worked on the album and would like to help'em out a bit with some shameless spam.
Check it out here:

Don't know if you can download it or what but it's worth a listen.
Cheers.

What do you think about NEVE 8816 (Analog Summing Amplifier) ??
Do you think that it is worth to plug it for a "bounce purpose",
if i don't want to let Protools to do the final bounce, could i use another hardware to put an analog texture on my tracks ?
How do i do that?
Do I have to route all my tracks in protools separately, through the NEVE, and then go in to record them in a stereo audio track ??
I have a small studio with PROTOOLS HD, YAMAHA DM1000, DYNAUDIO BM15A, and peripherals.
thanks for your comments,

I currently own a Tascam M-520, which is a -10db console designed to work with my Tascam TSR8 8-track and 32 2-track mixdown decks. I am interested in a new console on the market (Toft ATB), and though it operates at +4db nominal levels, I was wondering if it would work well with my Tascam decks, or should i stick it out with the 520 since it's more compatible? Any opinions?

hello-
i'm trying to figure out how to decode some serial/batch numbers of old 996 tape i have, and of 2 different lots, they seem to follow different schemes.
first, the newer appearing labels have a bar code and appear almost laser printed. here's an example:
20671-040-2-002
FWIW, this is from a batch purchased from tapetape in 2005 and i replayed the reels last week to find pretty significant shedding, so i transferred contents to the computer for backup.
next, another batch of tapes i got from another source follows what appears to be a different scheme - no bar code, the numbers almost look like someone hand stamped the white label a la a childhood librarian:
91246 08 13
this i speculate as "made in 1991, on the 246th day of the year in plant 8 batch 13".
but i can't figure out any logic on the newer/top one.
any ideas?
thx,
nk

IMP = Indie Mixing Project
We get a song from a band (generally donated by an engineer on the forums and with permission from the band). this is a multi-track. all the files are time aligned converted to 16bit 44.1 (or 48k) wavs. we use RAR data compression. from there, we put the files up on an FTP server that PSW has setup for this purpose. you login, download the RAR, load it up in the DAW of your favorite flavor and mix the song.
The Rules:
You CAN:
edit to your heart's content
Copy, paste, cut, manipulate, whatever.
Sound Replacer (or whatever you use) is acceptable.
you can tune the vocal, create vocal harmonies based of existing vocal tracks.
you CAN NOT:
overdub anything.
i.e. do not overdub a background vocal, add a guitar part, synth pads, piano...blah blah blah. you HAVE to work with the tracks you are given with the exception of using drum samples.
The Goal
to break down the barrier of asking how to mix better on the internet from answers of "it depends" to "here is exactly what i did with the exact same tracks you have"
this way, we can all listen to each others mixes and ask each other questions about mixes we like and certain treatments we want to know how they were done.
The simulation
when an IMP is posted for download, you will have exactly one week (7 days) to mix the song. this is FAR more time then i am typically given as a full time working mixer. you can NOT upload your song and post it prior to the deadline. all the songs go up within the same day. the cut off is around midnight central standard time. you must host the song yourself, if that is not possible, the PSW FTP will be provided for hosting.
links must be entered into the "IMPx song submission thread"
ONLY song submissions go in this thread. there will be a separate thread for discussion. this keeps referencing the songs quick and simple and not cluttering up the submission thread with chatter.
Recalls
Only i can ask for a recall. it is up to the mixer to agree to do a recall or not. do not feel obligated to do it.
The Server
the RAR files will be located here, and you can choose to upload your mp3s (192kb/s) if you need to.

pass: imp!234
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE YOU ALLOWED TO USE ANY IMP SONG FOR ADVERTISING. NO MYSPACE!!! if this happens, the future of IMP will be jeopardized in that artist will not be able to trust me in keeping their material from random distribution of unapproved mixes.

SIr,
Well, I'm currently on the USS XXXX, which is in the process of being gutted out, decommissioned, possibly being sold to a foreign navy, but more than likely being sunk, in the middle of Pacific Ocean, thus becoming a steel coral reef for the life aquatic. I am an electrician/interior communication engineer, basically the audio/visual nerd of the ship, at least with it came to the interior communication part, we'd setup port briefs, award ceremonies, retirements and burials-at-sea, worked on speakers (1MC, 21MC, sound powered phones, sound powered amplifiers commonly referred to as "bitch boxes"), that's the boring part of my job, among other things, but that's another post for another forum. Most of our equipment is pretty much outdated, most ships are completely digitized, in fact, this ship has the classic distinction of being the oldest command in the Pacific Fleet, forty-two years she's been floating, the only thing the keeping her together is gray paint. The neat part of this job or rather was, were playing 8mm movies and music (which varied, at least when I played my music, though my supervisor was a dick-head and mostly played r&b and hip hop, which I'm an open-minded fan of, but to a certain extent and that's putting it mildly), plus running our T.V. satellite.
So, before they updated all equipment, a la' digital, they used an antiquated system call S.I.T.E (shipboard Information Television Entertainment), back in the early 60s, 70s and up until the mid 80s, reel-to-reel tapes were played, during the work day. These were apparently sent to all ships on a weekly basis, some reels contained music: Motown, Country, Classical, USO performances. While others had news bits, stories and of course, prerecorded speeches and supposed pep-talks by certain ranking officials. The sound quality on some of these were amazing, while others were complete shite', moisture and heat damage, I suppose.
Anyhow, the majority of the broadcasting equipment is being sent back to NAVMEDIA, the honchos in charge of all broadcasting/audio equipment for the NAVY. But, as for the reel-to-reel, I plan to keep, after I inquired, about whether or not, anyone would miss this piece of equipment, so I plan to keep it for future experiments and failures. It sits mounted in a black metal shelf which is bolted to the deck, aside from worn buttons and faded paint, it is in pretty decent condition. From a pseudo-google search, because I couldn't find the manual for it or a manufacturing tag on it, I found out that particular model came out circa mid 80s, and has some value, among some reel-to-reel enthusiasts, but not much, though I'm not planning to sell it. Any thoughts? Advice, other than the obvious?
Actually, where could I find blank audio tape? Is that still possible without spending a whole lot on a student/sailor salary?
julian.
p.s.
man, I really dig yr records/group. I heard Joanna Newsom (great album/cd) talk about you on NPR last month, all positive, all technical, of course.

Does anyone know of anywhere online that has an interview or something where Steve talks about working with the band? Or even an interview with the band talking about working with him. I'm very curious.
Thanks

I have been recording for a couple of years with the EMU 0404 and an external preamp. Right now, I am using a Joe Meek VC3 I got for $95 on eBay with a Groove Tubes GT55 mic. I have moved from real guitar amps to PODxt and a SansAmp GT2. Basically, I wonder if a more expensive interface will give me better sound, or if what you are paying for with more expensive interfaces is the preamps- which I don't need because I'm using a decent quality external preamp. A Sound on Sound review of the EMU 0404 said that the EMU 1820M was "noticeably more clear and focused." You can hear samples of my current recordings at www.myspace.com/ozymandias3. Any comments on my recording/mixing technique would be appreciated. I am using Cubasis VST 4.0 and BBE Sonic Maximizer plug-in as my only recording software.

I'm listening to the newish Grandaddy album, apparently the last.I think it's absolutely amazing however my wife can't get into it at all,for reasons I fully understand. For those who have heard it I'd be interested in your opinions.Especially in regards to the perfection in pop philosophy,in contradistinction to the "truth of performance".

Does anyone have a cool pic of the remote? Im looking for the colors and functions of the arming/status buttons. The only pics I can find from studers own site are too small
