How timely!
I was just writing the chapter about exactly that issue for my book last night.
To sum up:
The ELAM and C12 timbres are very much related, and can easily be recognized as belonging to the same family of sounds. However, in addition to a lower noise floor, the ELAM's head construction and circuitry makes for a slightly more opaque sonic impression, which, considering the considerable amount of overall clarity and high frequency content of a C12, is not a bad thing at all. The ELA M, thus, goes a little bit more towards the U47 with M7 capsule, which, considering Telefunken's corporate history with the two brands, is not surprising.
The above implies using (by transplanting) the same CK12 capsule in both mics, for the argument of comparison. As CK12s never sound the same, an impression still can be averaged from listening to enough samples of the two models.
