So I was mixing a live gig and the "boss" comes up to me:
Boss: "What’s up with your mix?"
Me: what you mean?
Boss: It sounds like the drums are competing with the vocals?
Me: Yep! Like the record from switchfoot
Boss: Looks at me
Me: here, I play the first song...
Boss.....
Me: what you think?
Boss: who made this record?
Me: I don’t know Ill ask! Do you like it?
Boss: No, but I understand it,
Me: oh I see...
Boss: I’m old school, Vocals first, guitar, keys, bass and drums in that order of volume.
Me: wow...
Boss: leaves....I mix... Everyone is Happy!
So question anyone here involve with the record? vocals sound spectacular, and the drums are pretty poppy too! I know SWF is sponsor by ART, In the live gear the vocals run thru the ART GOLD and the Art Compressor too, was that the case for the album? Spill the beans on the record if you know...
Ps: Great album

Steve Lillywhite produced it (Dave Matthews, U2, Peter Gabriel, etc). Tom Lord Alge mixed it. Most of it was recorded at a studio in San Diego. If you use iTunes, you can check out them making the album in their video pod cast.

I believe Steve was more of an executive producer on it. Tim Palmer was more of the day to day guy. I also think John Fields had something to do with it. You might ask Strawberrius, he'd probably know more.

agreed, great sounding record. need to double check, but i think TLA mixed just one song on it as did john fields. john had produced their previous release, "nothing is sound" which was mixed by CLA and Bob Clearmountain. just a personal thing, but i like the sound of that record much better, but there are some outstanding mixes on the new one. "dirty second hands" which was mixed by john fields is one of my favorite sounding mixes i've heard in the last ten years. really stunning.
their record "the beautiful letdown" is like an all-star mix fest. TLA, CLA, JJP and more. check it.

thanks matt. that mix of dirty second hands was my 16 bit bounce out of protools at the end of day. we cut the song at big fish in san diego. lucky i bounced to 16bit and not MP3 (i usually do that with ruff mixes).
i also cut the song circles (at starstruck studio in nashville) great tones there. all ssl pres just like phil collins!!! love it. and the 3rd song i did on oh gravity was "let your love be strong" started at signature sound in SD. then tarted it up later and both circles and let your love were mixed by tim p at paramount C on ssl 9k.

Hi Strawberrius (what's your real name?) -
Since we have you here, I've got to know.... tell us about the electric guitars on Circles, especially the dirty ones when they come in big.
Ever since "The Beautiful Letdown", I've lusted for Switchfoot's guitar sounds. They are different than what you hear on the typical record these days. Very "chewy" for a lack of a better description. Circles is about as good as it gets, imho.
I'd love to hear a run down of what you did.
Thanks,
Thomas

the band was on tour at the time of cutting circles and i happened to be in nashville working with glen phillips & steven miller. switchfoot came to the studio i was at and we cut for i think 2 days while they were off. the amps were their road gear which at the time was probably an orange, an ac30 and maybe a badcat. pretty much that stuff and pedals. the second day dude from 6pence brought over some smaller kikass amps. i remember trying to rent a little labs splitter box but no rental place had one in nashville. i think we were mixing 2 amps to 1 track a bit. a year later in SD we replaced/sweetened/added some of the more atmospheric gtr/keys stuff and sean watkins played the intro/outro fingerpick stuff since he lived near by in sandiego.
