I have a couple of mic pres that don't have 48V built in, and I was thinking of putting some 48V spots in the patch bay, so I can just patch into phantom if I need to, ahead of these pres. Does anybody have a suggestion for the best way to do this?

Basically the following works:
two sockets, grounds linked, with a pair of 10µF capacitors joining the two hots, and the two colds. -Then two 6.8kΩ quarter-Watt 1% resistors from the hot and cold on the TO MICROPHONE connector, coming from your 48V feed.
That's basically what'll be inside the Apex box, also.
You can make your own box if you use a small 20-0-20 transformer, a bridge rectifier, a smoothing cap and an LM317 type regulator circuit... -That way it's portable, if that's of any value to you.
-Remember to caution people agains patching ribbons etc. into it of course.

JJ is (I'm fairly certain) referring to just wiring it to the patchbay, as Dave suggested.

If you do wire phantom hot patch points in a bay, make sure you have an on/off switch for it. I remember several studios in LA back in the early 80's that had mic patch points on the bays. We would turn off the lights when patching just to see the sparks when the tips touched the sleeves.

On the O'Henry console, we made a custom circuit board to fit the rear of a Mosses & Mitchell bay with 48 switches, 96 6k8 resistors and 48 leds with current limiting resistors. No capacitors were used since the mic pre in was a Jensen xformer. Leds are a good reminder that phantom is engaged.
